Waterfalls and WiFi

A short update but a happy one. Here we go!

So this week held one of my favorite days of being here. My friend YaYa came over this weekend (a short 5 hour walk from her village across the mountains) and we went hiking. We set out early in the morning and hiked downhill for about an hour until we reached the river. Then we gleefully took off our shoes, rolled up our pants, and stepped into the water.

We spent most of the rest of the day hiking up the river, barefoot in the water. Wild women of Lesotho! We took our sweet time about our walk, lounging like lizards in the sun, munching raisins and granola, and generally enjoying a spectacular day. The weather was cool in the morning while we were hiking, then sunny and warm while we were in the water, then the clouds rolled in right as we started back toward the village. The rain held out until we were less than 5 minutes from the house and then it dumped. We ended up as soaked as we had been earlier, though the walk back over the mountains had dried us off.

(Racing the thunderstorm. We lost. We didn’t care.)

The best part of the day was later in the afternoon when we found the water fall. It was a few hundred meters back from the river, water from one of the tributaries pouring over. We scrambled over rocks and thistles until we got up to it. There was a overhang that it tumbled over and it was absolutely beautiful. We were able to edge our way along the rock face and behind the water fall. I have never before taken a shower in a waterfall and now I can cross off that bucket list experience.

It was a magical day and the leisurely 7 hour hike was one of the best I have ever done, regardless of country or company.

The other note for the week is that this morning I managed to get WiFi on my computer. This is only notable because this is the first time I have found WiFi for my computer in six months. Yippee!!

On that note, today is the six month anniversary of my coming to Lesotho. Time has flown by, even at the times where is seems to move at a snail’s pace. I can’t believe it’s been half a year!!! Here’s to another twenty!
