A Year in Review

I’ve decided that since 2018 was such a momentous year for me to do a wrap up by the numbers. (In no particular order…)

  • Countries- 11 (USA, Iceland, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England, France, Italy, Switzerland, South Africa, Lesotho)
  • Continents- 3 (North America, Europe, Africa)
  • Number of hours in planes- 51 (Longest flight was 15 hours from JFK to Johannesburg)
  • Degrees earned- 2 (Astronomy and Physics from the University of Washington)
  • Certifications earned- 4 (Wilderness First Responder, CPR, Epinephrine, PC Maths Teacher)
  • Languages spoken/read- 9 (English, Icelandic, Gaelic, Celtic, Welsh, French, Italian, German, Sesotho)
  • States- 6 (CA, OR, WA, TX, PA, NY)
  • Districts visited- 5 (Berea, Leribe, Maseru, Mokhotlong, Thaba-Tseka)
  • Months spent living out of a suitcase- 4
  • New names- 2 (Bohlokoa Kotsoane during training- Bohlokoa meaning importance, Rethabile Motsomi at site- Rethabile meaning happiness)
  • Types of money used- 7 (Dollars, Kroners, Pounds, Euros, Francs, Rand, Maloti)
  • National Parks visited- 4 (Yosemite, Redwood, Thingvellir, Tsehlanyane)
  • Heads of state seen in person- 4 (Queen of England and other collected members of the royal family seen at Buckingham Palace for the 100th anniversary of the RAF, the King and Queen and PM of Lesotho who all attended our swearing in ceremony a few weeks ago)
  • Unintentional air shows- 3 (100th Anniversary of the RAF, Bastille Day, France winning the World Cup while we were in Paris)
  • Musical groups joined- 1 (I am a member of the bluegrass band formed by PC volunteers during training. We are one hit wonder, but hey, we performed in front of the King!)
  • Number of hitchhiking rides- 1 (on Christmas Day to get to our friends house, I was not alone and the guys who gave us a hitch were very friendly and talkative)

2018 was a very important year for me and 2019 will be a whole different kind of adventure. I am so excited to take this new year on and I’ll keep you all updated as this rollercoaster continues on its merry way. Wishing you all a wonderful new year and waving a fond farewell to one that has just past.

New Year, New Do
